Born in Stephenville Crossing, Newfoundland, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Cormier. She was raised by her father and her grandmother Catherine Cormier whom she loved very much. She was the owner and operator of Main Street Thrift and Variety store for a number of years. She loved a bargain and enjoyed going to yard sales. She also loved caring for her grandchildren. She was a member of the Roman Catholic Church.
In addition to her husband and father, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Jeanette Whalen Arnold.
She is survived by one son, Darren Joseph Gillis; two daughters, Catherine Lindsay and her husband Mark of Madison Heights and Deborah Woosley of Rustburg; three step-children, Joseph Whalen, Annette Whalen and Maria Whalen and 17 grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 20, 2013 at the Tree of Life Cemetery in Altavista with the Rev. Tom Bryant officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, December 19, 2013 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
The family would like to greatefully acknowledge the compasionate care provided by the doctors, nurses and staff of the Lynchburg General Hospital Oncology department.
