Born on January 9, 1935 in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Quinton Davis Overman and the late Lessie Pearl Faulkner Holder. Ed grew up in the Presbyterian Home from age 5 to early high school and developed a heart for those in need. After serving our country in the United States Army in the 82nd Airborne Division, Ed returned home to Lynchburg where he met Vernelle, the love of his life, while attending Lynchburg College. He then transferred to dental school at Medical College of Virginia. During this time he worked with the Pawmunky Indian Tribe providing dental services, and later also worked for the Amherst County School System providing services for children. Ed had a rewarding career as a dentist and became the Dental Director for Central Virginia Training School where he worked for forty years. In 1971, Ed was selected as one of the Outstanding Young Men of America for his service and contributions to his professional associations and community, including his work with the Madison Heights Jaycees. Ed was always very generous, providing free dental care, helping as a handyman, and assisting with moves as the best U-Haul packer in the state. He was an avid athlete, outdoorsman, and loved trips to the beach. Ed was an active member of Peakland United Methodist Church.
He was a devoted brother, husband, father and grandfather and is survived by his sister, Marybelle Harrison and step siblings, Nancy Welton, Evelyn Welti, and Mark Overman; four daughters, Sandra Bryant, Donna Slye (John), Andrea Salas (Manuel), and Rhonda Overman (Mark); 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by four siblings and his grandson, Joseph.
A private memorial service will be held for family only on January 9th, his 86th birthday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Peakland United Methodist Church, 4434 Boonsboro Road, Lynchburg, Virginia, 24503.
