David John Skelly

David John Skelly, 59, departed this life on Saturday December 13, 2014 with his wife of 33 years at his side after a brave battle with multiple myeloma that he fought over 4 years. He faced the struggle with courage and hope, always willing to try anything that would give him another day to spend with his family and friends. Dave was preceded in death by his father, Owen Skelly. Dave is survived by his loving and devoted wife Carole and his amazing and supportive children: Colleen Larzelere (Alex), Daniel Skelly (Megan), Keith Skelly and LaurenSkelly. He leaves behind to cherish his memories his mother, Helen Syrjamaki Skelly, and 6 brothers and sisters: Gerry McGrane (John Mihelic), Brenda Berglund, Owen Skelly, Garrett Skelly(Merci), Ed Skelly (Linda) and Vern Skelly(Stephanie). He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Also, he leaves behind Carole’s family who have offered unending support throughout his illness: Ken Nelson (Carol) and Brian Nelson (Deb). Dave graduated from the University of Minnesota as a Mining Engineer in 1978. He worked in many industries, but his favorite job was his current job working for Department of Environmental Quality as an Environmental Engineer in Lynchburg. He was a hard worker, very conscientious and had a special bond with his co- workers. His family is told that the office will not be the same without him. The family appreciates the care, support and dedication of Duke Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic, the Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center and the Multiple Myeloma Support Group of Salem, VA. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, December 19, 2014 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. Inurnment will follow at Virginia Memorial Park.
