David Robert Nower, 76, of Lynchburg, passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2020. He was the loving husband of the late Carol Lee Nower. The two were preceded in death by their infant son, Bruce Robert Nower. David is survived by two children: Shannon Lee (Nower) Migut of St. Johns, FL and Thomas James Nower of Ft. Myers, FL; his two sisters, Lois (Nower) Weston and Trudy Nower of the Outer Banks area, NC; and his one grandchild, Chloe Marie Migut of St. Johns, FL.
Born on September 26, 1944 in Bangor, ME, David was the son of the late George Robert Nower and the late Evelyn Mae (McCready) Nower. David grew up in Florida, where he and Carol raised their children and cared for both of his parents and Carol's mother at their home in Miami.
In 1999, David and his wife were able to relocate to the Lynchburg area, where David continued to work, but the couple’s pace of life was more suited to their needs. After a long career electronics, technical and emergency communications installation, monitoring, maintenance and customer service, David eventually retired from MaCom, here in Lynchburg, and relished his retirement years.
David lived happily in Lynchburg for 23 years. Within a year of their move to Lynchburg, David and Carol were active members of Calvary Baptist Church, where they had many friends and served their community together. Additionally, David loved time spent with “the Brethren,” a men’s group focused on helping church members in need with everything from driving people to doctor’s appointments, to helping in across town moves.
David was an avid NASCAR fan who followed Richard and Kyle Petty as well as Dale and “Junior” Earnhardt. As if it were a second hobby, David enjoyed assisting his neighbors as well. He really was “Mr. Fix It” on everything from TV’s, to closets, to printers, and gave to others whatever he could. When he wasn't busy bringing a church member's computer back from the beyond, he very much enjoyed creating "monster” computers for himself, partly from pieces of his previous ones, and by making “upgrades." Though he did not have as much post-secondary schooling as he would have liked, David continued learning about technology throughout even his retirement years.
It cannot be understated that David was a faithful caregiver to his wife Carol. The two were able to celebrate fifty years of married life together. David was God's humble servant, adored and supported his wife, Carol, for fifty years, hugged and encouraged their children, and doted on his only granddaughter.
David was the Nower family's rock, and they will miss him dearly. His dry humor, original “Dad Jokes,” and quiet steady strength all came from a wellspring of unconditional love. No one could have asked for a better brother, husband, father, or grandfather. Everyone he knew appreciated David's quiet wisdom and belief in each person's potential, even if they could not see if for themselves.
There will be an open time to pay respects on Sunday, February 7, 2020 from 12 to 4 pm at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Per David’s request, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Association, the American Heart Association, or the American Cancer Society.
