Carroll Smith left this temporal existence on June 8, 2023 in Lynchburg, of natural causes. He was born in Lynchburg on April 4, 1925, to Effie and Rex Smith. Carroll got his first glimpse of the world beyond Lynchburg in World War II, when he joined the Army Air Corps and was stationed in Texas and Oklahoma, training as a bomber pilot. When he was about to be assigned to the Pacific Theatre, V-J day was declared. That ended WWI, but definitely did not end his travels. After the war, he set off to the jungles of Honduras to take a job in a logging camp.
Eventually returning to Lynchburg, he married Lois Beaton of Appomattox in 1951, with whom he raised three children. Carroll served as a devoted caretaker to Lois during her lengthy ordeal with ovarian cancer.
He gained a second family with his second marriage, to Elizabeth "Bebe" Savage, and the two enjoyed countless miles of world travels together.
Carroll graduated from VPI, and spent most of his working life as a salesman for Wyeth Labs. However, the great enthusiasms of his life were boating and horses, and he was active for many years as a rider in the Bedford County Hunt.
His civic involvement included the Lynchburg Rotary club (where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow), and service as a deacon at First Presbyterian Church.
Carroll was preceded in death by his second wife, Elizabeth, his brother, Rex, and his sister, Alice.
He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Kim Szydlowski (Mike) of Williamsburg, Va., Brett Smith (Jane) of New Zealand, and Kip Smith (Ginny) of Lynchburg, as well as by Bebe's children, Joan Sydnor (Bob) of Spring Island, S.C., son Daniel Fred Savage, III, (Stevie) of Lynchburg, and Sarah Elizabeth Savage, of Deland, Fl.
Carroll's life was enriched by grandchildren, Beaton Szydlowski, Kane Szydlowski (Chelsea), Jake Smith (Taylor), Stephanie Smith Leslie (Josh), Tim Anderson (Kelsie), Louise Anderson, Blair Schulz (Kurt), Clayton Tangen (Travis), Emily Short (Ronnie), as well as by six great- grandchildren...and Totsy, his faithful and beloved Maltipoo.
A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be conducted on Sunday, June 18, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel officiated by Rev. Dick Boswell. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
The Smith family also would like to gratefully acknowledge the caring attention provided by staff members of Bentley Commons, Gentle Shepherd Hospice and Lincare.
