Hjalti “Red” Jonsson Gudmundsson, 76, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 6, 2024. Born on February 29, 1948, in Reykjavik, Iceland, Red’s leap-year birth brought a rare and unique spirit into the world, one filled with life, humor, and kindness.
At 19, Red immigrated to the United States, where he built a successful career in the oil industry as a drilling supervisor. His work ethic, dedication, and leadership left a lasting legacy of camaraderie and professionalism until his retirement.
Red was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Paula Holcomb Gudmundsson, whom he married on June 8, 1985, and by his parents, Gudmundur Jon Hjaltason and Sigridur Sveinsdottir. He is survived by his sister, Johanna Margret Gudmundsdottir.
Red was known for his quick wit, infectious humor, and big heart. He deeply cared for those around him and lived life to the fullest. A passionate sports enthusiast, he loved following and watching games, especially soccer, a sport he played in his youth. In his later years, Red developed a love for wine and became a connoisseur, enjoying the finer things in life with friends and family.
He also cherished his time at his second home on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where he welcomed friends and family with open arms. Red’s warmth, laughter, and generous spirit will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Family and friends are invited to attend Red's Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, October 26, 2024 for 11:00 am at White Funeral Home, 315 Hwy 11 South, Poplarville, Mississippi. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am.
