She was preceded in death by her father, William George Murphy; her mother, Ollie Dee Spann Ziegler; her sisters, Myrtel Thompson and Susie Tipton; her brother, Wayne Murphy; and the love of her life and best friend, James "Bud" Lout.
Shirley leaves behind her five children: Joe Nelson, Roy Nelson and his wife Polly, Sherry Owens, Robert McNiel and his wife Donna, and Jimmy Capps and his wife Molly; her sisters, Ellen Evans, Dell Wood, and Lynn Gordon; and her brother, Jerry Murphy. Her memory will also live on through her nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was a homemaker and made the best pecan pie! There was never a time that she didn't make you laugh. Her smile and laugh were sunshine on a rainy day.
Shirley loved to hear Bud play the guitar and watch him shine his boots. Their favorite place was on the porch, sitting in their rocking chairs, waving at every passing car. She was very fond of shopping, but really loved garage sales. It didn't matter where—she'd turn around and get there as fast as she could, and she'd shop 'til she dropped.
Shirley was an amazing daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. She had a fighting spirit and was the glue holding everyone together. She taught her family to love one another and to cherish the memories they shared.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Cross Timbers Cowboy Church, 4977 US-69, Lufkin, TX 75904, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM.
Shirley will be laid to rest in West Family Cemetery, Farm to Market 220, Alto, TX, next to Bud.
