Mr. McClendon was born December 12, 1958, in Lufkin, Texas, the son of Ina Florine (Hambrick) and Roy Leo McClendon. He passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at his hunting lease in Alto, TX. A life-long resident of East Texas, he was a hard-working provider who was absolutely dedicated to his family. Roy’s first job at the age of 14 years old was at the Angelina County Airport; afterwords, he worked at Southwest Color, Clawson Fence Company, Clemsa Lumber Company, and was a self-employed dump truck private contractor. An exceptional mechanic with unparalleled engineering skills, he was a handyman who could essentially “fix anything.” Most recently, he was employed at Texas Department of Transportation (TxDot) for 15 years before retiring in March 2024. When he wasn’t working, Roy loved being with his family. Married since 1977 at the age of 18, Roy was a committed, caring, and compassionate husband who spoke fondly about waking up early every morning to spend time with the love of his life and best friend, Pam. When not busy with a “to-do” list from his loving wife, Roy also enjoyed spending time in the great outdoors. He could often be found fishing at Lake Nacogdoches in spring and summer, or at The Benge Hunting Club in Alto, Texas in fall and winter. He served his community as the Interim President of Grimes Cemetery and President of Benge Hunting Club in Alto, TX. Most importantly, Mr. McClendon was a man of Christian Faith and integrity. He prayed for his family and read the Bible daily and trusted God in all things. A member of Harmony Hill Baptist Church since 1989, he lived the values of being a moral, honorable, faithful, and loving man. A doting husband, strong father and grandfather who loved to laugh and joke, Roy will be missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Pamala Ann McClendon, daughter Dr. Dixie McClendon-Coker and husband Lee Coker, son Dr. Levi McClendon, brother Billy Royce McClendon and wife Carolyn McClendon, and sister-in-law Karen McClendon, dear mother-in-law JoAnn Dixon, brothers-in-law Greg Dixon and Archer Dixon. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Augustus Coker, Emma McClendon, Helen McClendon, and Gaius Coker, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family members and friends. On his final day of life, Roy was surrounded by family including his great nephew Benjamin McClendon, Archer Dixon, and JoAnn Dixon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Florine McClendon, brother Gaylon McClendon, father-in-law Archie Bee Dixon, and brother in-law Jason Dixon
