His father died in the Spanish Flu epidemic in 1918. He and his mother then moved to Corpus Christi where they endured the Hurricane of 1919. They then moved to Riviera, Texas and made their home with his grandparents. Summers were often spent on the ranches of his uncles.
He studied Agriculture at Texas A & I in Kingsville and received his
B. S. degree in 1935. He taught school in Hebronville and Riviera.
In 1942, Max married Carolyn Clinkinbeard. They lived in Kingsville and he was employed at Celanese Corp. from 1946 until his retirement in 1974. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Kingsville.
He had a wonderful talent for writing and wrote short stories and memories of his childhood. In his retirement he studied art and enjoyed painting scenic landscapes. In 2001, he moved to San Antonio to be near his daughter, Buffi. Upon her death in January, 2011, he came to Lufkin to be near his daughter, Mary.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn; his son-in-law, Gregg Johnston; and his daughter, Elizabeth (Buffi) Johnston, on January 11, 2011.
A gentle and caring man, he loved his family.
Max is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Kenneth Needham of Lufkin; grandchildren, Keith Needham and wife Karen, of Livingston; Trey Crocker and wife Amber of San Antonio; Lisa Needham Soto and husband Sal of Lufkin; Gregory Johnston and fiancee Emily of Austin; great-grandchildren, Austin, Hannah, Sara, Nicole, Ace Max, Ryder, Dakota, Kyle, Hunter, Harper and Violet; and special friend, Arthur Kleck.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 11, 2011 at Chamberlain Cemetery in Kingsville, Texas with John Seekamp officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, February 9, 2011 at Gipson Funeral Home.
