Services for Reverend John R. Grubbs, 89, of Wells, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2012 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Horace Fletcher officiating. Interment will follow in the Simpson Cemetery.
Reverend Grubbs was born April 1, 1923 in Cherokee County, Texas, the son of the late Martha Louisa (Goodwin) and Robert Graves Grubbs. He passed away Thursday, December 20, 2012 in a Wells nursing facility.
Reverend Grubbs was a retired minister. He pastored numerous churches in East Texas area and founded and built the Church of the Lord Jesus in Wells. He was also the owner and operator of Grubbs Saw Shop, where he did small engine repair. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, raising cattle and gardening. Reverend Grubbs served his country with the United States Army during World War II.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Robert Earl and Daisy Grubbs of Wells; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Richard Reyes of Wells, Nelda and Philip Stephenson of Wells, Shirley and Ricky Hope of Magnolia and Sandra and Donnie McKnight of Wells; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other family members.
In addition to his parents, Reverend Grubbs was preceded in death by his wife, Marie (Emerson) Grubbs; and 12 siblings (he was the last surviving sibling of 13 children.)
Pallbearers will be Timmy Crustner, Chad Crustner, Brandon Hope, Mitchell Berry, Wendell Smith and Charles Robertson.
Reverend Grubbs' family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Hillside Plaza Nursing Home for the love and care shown to their father.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at Gipson Funeral Home.
