Services for Joe C. Johnson, 74, of Lufkin, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 27, 2014, in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Bro. Kevin Roy, Bro. Charles Roberts, and Bro. Ron Meadows officiating. Interment services will follow in the Huntington Oddfellows Cemetery.
Mr. Johnson was born September 9, 1939 in Huntington, Texas. He passed away Monday, February 24, 2014 in a local hospital.
Mr. Johnson’s grandchildren were the light of his life. He loved working outdoors, tending to his horses, and drinking coffee with his friends. He was a lifelong resident of Lufkin and graduated from Lufkin High School in 1957. Mr. Johnson was the owner of Johnson & Johnson Packing Company. Afterwards, he worked at William George Co. and retired following 35 years of employment. He attended Denman Avenue Baptist Church. Mr. Johnson served his country in the United States Army.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Patsy Johnson of Lufkin; daughter and son-in-law, LaJeana and Chris Hardig of Houston; granddaughters, Anna and Hallie Hardig; a number of nieces, nephews, other family members and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Fannie E. Carrell; stepfather, George Carrell; father, Cecil Medford Johnson; stepmother, May Johnson; and brother, Larry Medford Johnson.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Spells, Michael Spells, Billy Goodwin, Josh Lawrence, Glenn Wallace, Charles Poindexter, Jack Rice, and Jackson Barnes.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Denman Avenue Baptist Church, 1807 E. Denman Avenue, Lufkin, TX 75901; or to the American Cancer Society, 212 Gene Samford Drive, Lufkin, TX 75904.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at Gipson Funeral Home.
