Jerry "Gene" Hemphill, 79, of Lufkin, was born June 17, 1931, in Richland, Texas, the son of the late Etoyle (Cunningham) and Darrow Hemphill. He passed away Friday, August 13, 2010 on the banks of the Angelina River, doing what he loved best, with a fishing pole in his hand.
Gene was self employed in the construction business. He was part owner of Hemphill Pile Driving and H & H Pipe & Steel. He was an honest and hard worker. Gene was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed being outdoors. He also enjoyed playing poker with his friends at their weekly meeting.. He was a caring man, loved his family, and accomplished the things that he set out to do. Gene served his country in the United States Navy. He was a member of Lufkin's First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Jo Hemphill of Lufkin; sons, Jerry Hemphill Jr. and wife Tina and Joey Hemphill and wife Debbie, all of Lufkin; granddaughters, Stephanie Hemphill and Julie Hemphill; grandsons, Brian Hemphill and Eric Hemphill; great-grandson, Carson Cleveland; and a number of other family members and friends.
Pallbearers will be Butch Maddux, Bud Maddux, Doug Maddux, Fred Wareing, JImmy Chmielewski and Marion Abner.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Group Therapy Social Club.
Services for Gene will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 16, 2010 in the Elwyn M. Gipson Memorial Chapel in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park, with Reverend D. Nick Sholars officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening at Gipson Funeral Home.
