J.E. Driskell, 88, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2025, in Lufkin, Texas. Born on March 10, 1937, J.E. was a devoted family man, a loyal friend, and someone who could always be counted on to lend a helping hand. Known for his generosity and servant’s heart, he truly lived by the creed that it is more blessed to give than to receive.
A longtime member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, J.E. cherished his family and took great pride in his role as an uncle, often doting on his nieces and nephews who looked up to him with love and admiration. For many years, he led the Modisette family reunions, happily anticipating the potluck lunches and shared fellowship. An avid outdoorsman, J.E. found joy in hunting and spending time in nature.
J.E. was a natural athlete and began playing football with the Lufkin High School Panthers. His talent on the field attracted recruitment from every school in the Southwest Conference, and he ultimately chose to play for Texas A&M University. After college, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, spending two years stationed in Germany. Upon returning home, he worked as a long-haul truck driver and a state game warden before beginning a fulfilling career as a special agent with the Southern Pacific Railroad. J.E. earned the respect of many as a peace officer and was an active member of the East Texas Peace Officers Association and the Sheriffs’ Association of Texas.
J.E. is now reunited in heaven with his parents, Joe Edward and Winona (O’Neal) Driskell; his beloved wife, Robbie Lee (Browning) Driskell; his sister, O’Nealia Hart; and nephew, Kevin Hart—as well as many dear friends and family who welcomed him home with open arms.
He is survived by his long-time companion, Ann Hawkins; his sister, Rose Womack and husband John; brother-in-law, Louis Hart; nephew, Carl Womack (Denise); nieces, Janet Womack Cowey (Michael), Michelle Hart Hyder, and Angela Womack Williams (Chris); great-niece, Grace Cowey; and great-nephews, Wade Hyder, Jacob Williams, and Luke Williams.
Family and friends are invited to gather from 12–2 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, at Gipson Funeral Home, 1515 S. Chestnut St., Lufkin, TX 75901. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m., with interment at Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
