Coleen June Briggs, age 94, passed away peacefully at her home in Lufkin, TX on August 19, 2024. Born on June 6, 1930, in Bay City, Michigan, to Viola and Lawrence Blair, Coleen lived a life marked by dedication, service, and love.
Coleen was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert Jerome Blair, and her sister Susanne Jane Collett. She is survived by her daughter, Gail S. Mitchell, her sons James W. Briggs and his wife Nancy, and Gerald P. Briggs and his wife Eileen. She is also cherished by seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
A lifelong learner and advocate, Coleen held a master’s degree and enjoyed a diverse career. Her roles included an elementary school teacher, a social worker, a CPS worker, a drug and alcohol abuse counselor, and a probation officer. She was immensely proud of her professional accomplishments and her unwavering commitment to helping others. Coleen was also a published author of two children's books, reflecting her love for education and storytelling.
Coleen's spirit extended beyond her professional life. She was a passionate volunteer, teaching handicap swimming classes and dedicating time to community service. Her retirement years were filled with travel, a testament to her adventurous nature and zest for life.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no services. Coleen will be cremated, with arrangements handled by Gipson Funeral Home in Lufkin. Her legacy of kindness, compassion, and dedication to others will be remembered fondly by all who knew her.
