Services for Charles “Charlie” Havard, 72, of Diboll, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 22, 2014 in the Elwyn M. Gipson Memorial Chapel in Garden of Memories Memorial Park with C.G. Grigg officiating. Interment will follow in Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mr. Havard was born April 23, 1942 in Lufkin, the son of the late Elsie (Kelly) and Preston Havard, and passed away September 19, 2014 in a Houston hospital.
He enjoyed playing golf and loved his community. He was a sports columnist and photographer for the Diboll Free Press from 1964 to 1982 and was inducted into the Diboll Wall of Honor. He also served on the Diboll Parks Committee and the Diboll school board. He always drove the Diboll Day grand prize in the parade. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Diboll for over 50 years. He and Nell Burchfield were married on August 17, 1962, and they enjoyed 43 years of marriage. Mr. Havard was a sales representative for Temple Inland and retired after 44 years.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Kent and Lisa Havard of Diboll; daughter, Carla Waggonner of Huntington; son Kerry Havard of Diboll; grandchildren, Chelsea Havard, Kirby Havard, Josh Byars, Hunter Waggonner, Jake Waggonner, Kyle Havard and Koltyn Havard; great-grandchild, Amzie Byars; brother and sister-in-law, John and Cissy Havard; sisters, Molly Goodwin and Jimmie Beth Havard; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Nell Havard; and sister, Betty Minton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Diboll History Center, 102 North Temple Drive, Diboll, Texas 75941.
Honorary pallbearers are Jack Sweeny, Gary Martel, Don Hendrick, Tom Farley, Scott Robertson, Bobby Ramsey and Dick Miller.
The family expresses special thanks to his friends at Diboll Brookshire Brothers and Diboll History Center.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Monday prior to the service in the Elwyn M. Gipson Memorial Chapel, 5202 South First Street, Lufkin, TX.
