Willie (Bill) Levi Nelson, 93 of Lubbock, TX, passed away Sunday, April 1, 2018. Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 4th from 6-8 pm at Resthaven Funeral Home. The graveside service will be Thursday, April 5th at 1:00 pm. Services will be officiated by Kirk Kitchens, Pastor of Westview Baptist church in Slaton, TX.
Bill was born on February 2, 1925 to Raymon and Nancy Nelson in Lockney, TX. He graduated from Quanah High School in 1942, where he lettered in track and also played football.
Bill served in the United States Army during World War II in the Philippines and New Guinea in the battles and Campaigns of Bismarck Archipelago, New Guinea and Luzon. Bill was decorated with the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal will 3 bronze stars; the Philippine Liberation Ribbon’ Good Conduct Medal; Victory Ribbon; and 4 overseas service bars.
Bill married the love of his life, Frances (Fran) Yerby on March 15, 1946 in Plainview, TX. They then moved to Lubbock, TX where he attended Texas Tech University earning his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1949. He was a life-long member of the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi, Beta Upsilon Chapter.
Following graduation he was employed by the Lubbock County Tax Assessors Office as Chief Deputy Tax Collector for 37 years, before retiring in 1990. During retirement he enjoyed his vegetable garden and R.V. traveling with his family.
Bill is survived by his wife, Fran; daughter Sherry Nelson Andrews of Lubbock; Son Michael Kurt Nelson and wife, Yolanda, of Krugerville, TX; 3 grandchildren: Laura Delcambre and husband, Joseph, of Lubbock, Chase Nelson and wife, Rachel, of Denton, TX and Schyler Nelson of Krugerville, TX; 2 great-grandchildren: Rowen Amelia Delcambre and Heidi Nelson. Bill is also survived by 2 sisters: Juanita Konkler of Tulsa, OK, and Jane Dormier of Seymour, TX; 1 brother, Bobby Nelson of Weatherford, TX and many nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers, Raymon Jr., Cecil and Sidney Nelson.
