Verla Mae Lewis Chaffin, “Mommies” and “Grandma Verla”, 83, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 3, 2011 in Lubbock. The family will meet friends at Resthaven Funeral Home from 5:30-7 on Sunday, March 6th. Graveside services will be in Lamesa Memorial Park, Lamesa, TX, at 11am on Monday, March 7th. Verla was born on October 4, 1927 in Lamesa, Texas, to Ed and Vera (Holder) Lewis. She was raised in Patricia, Texas and attended Klondike schools. She married Edsil L. Chaffin on August 16, 1946 in Lamesa. She followed her husband, brother-in-law and father-in-law all over West Texas as they built many cotton gins in this area. They lived in Patricia, Pecos, Meadow, Ropesville, Tahoka, and O’Donnell, before moving to Lubbock in 1954. She was a stay at home mom until the nest was empty, then she went to work for various restaurants in Lubbock such as Seven Seas and Underwoods. She ended her cooking career at Lubbock State School, from which she retired. She was well known for her wonderful cooking, especially her homemade candy, cakes, and pies. She was also an excellent seamstress, making many of her daughter’s and granddaughter’s clothes. She was a Baptist, and was baptized in the 1st Baptist Church of Patricia, where she listened to her mother play the church piano.
She was welcomed to heaven by her parents, her husband, Edsil, her grandson Kevin Axton, and her sister-in-law Margaret Chaffin.
Her memory will be cherished by her only child, daughter Sherry Axton (Gary), of Lubbock, granddaughters, Christy Martin (Daniel) and Leah Tyson, both of Lubbock, grandsons Kipp Axton (Melinda) of San Antonio, and Cory Axton (Jill) of Lubbock. She is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren, Jacob, Justin, Indy and Sydney of Lubbock, and Ryan, Lauren. Marnee, and Zak of San Antonio. She also leaves a sister, Sandra Schaeffer (Jerry) of Brownwood, brother-in-law, Bill “Junior” Chaffin of Lubbock, and sister-in-law Billie Harvick Flippin (Jack) of Dallas, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to extent their appreciation and thanks to Whisperwood and Hospitality House Nursing Centers for all their care and friendship to Verla over the last few years, and for Hospice of Lubbock for their help and comfort to her and all her family in her last days on earth. A special thanks goes to Dr. Andy and Janie Gray and his staff for unselfishly going out of their way to be there for her and being a great Christian testimony to us all, and to the doctors and nurses at The Palliative Medicine Unit at Covenant Hospital. The family suggests memorials be sent to Hospice of Lubbock, Lubbock Meals on Wheels, or Disaster Relief Ministry of Lubbock Area Baptist Assn.
