Mrs. Ruby Dean Smith, cherished wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away on September 11, 2024, in the comfort of her home. Ruby was born in Pueblo, Colorado on December 28, 1933.
She married Albert James Smith on July 30,1952 in Pueblo. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Lubbock, Texas where she remained a lifelong resident. Ruby devoted her life and career to the nurturing and well-being of children. Her many years of service included Atkins Cafeteria, Second Baptist Day Care, private day care, and her own home. Ruby enjoyed camping and being with her family and friends.
Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, her mother Evelyn Richardson Thurston, her sisters Martha Koncilia and Mary Thurston, brother-in-law Eugene Howard, nephew Timothy Howard, and a great grandson Eric Groce.
Ruby is survived by her son Paul Smith and wife Connie of Terrell, Texas and daughter, Evelyn Kirksey of Lubbock. She is also survived by her grandchildren James Smith of Coppell, Sarah Groce of San Antonio, Dr. Jacob Kirksey of Lubbock, and Jordan Kirksey of Madrid, Spain. Ruby is also survived by her twin sister Ruth Howard, sister Edna Lenzen, niece Linda (Ernest) Betts, and nephew Tracy Howard, and great nieces Megan and Nicole Betts. Ruby was blessed with six great grandchildren: Adam, Riley, and Alice Blades; Everett and Edwyn Smith, and Ben Groce. Ruby’s legacy of love and kindness lives on in her family.
Though we are sad today, we claim Psalm 30:5 “weeping may remain for a night, but joy comes in the morning”.
Ruby’s family would like to express their appreciation to Hospice of Lubbock, Dr Brown, Amber-FNP, Ben-FNP Elizabeth-Chaplain, Maci-RN, and Gloria-CNA. Last but never forgotten, Ruby’s family would like to express their appreciation to her home caregivers: Rosa, Rachael, Van, Gloria, and Mary.
