Ramona (Monie) was born November 2, 1956 to Nolan and Billie Mathis. She was a lifelong Lubbock resident.
Ramona was married to Greg Phillips and together they were raising their great niece, Arwyn Vieregge, who was the joy of her life.
After graduation from Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School in 1975, Ramona had several jobs that prided her with lasting friendships. She worked for the Lubbock Medical Center for Women for 9 years, South Plains Mall, The Bombay Company (where she was their first and only manager during their 16 years in Lubbock) and Dollar General, where she managed stores for 10 years.
Ramona was a fierce supporter of women’s healthcare, she volunteered with the Lubbock County Elections office where she worked tirelessly to assist citizens with voting in several years’ elections. She supported Habitat for Humanity, Literacy Lubbock, Goodwill, and many other organizations. She enjoyed interior decorating, cooking and provided exceptional meals for many. She was a cat mama, hesitantly at first, then full blown as time passed.
She loved a good book, and was a voracious reader. She loved movies, especially old B&W ones and would have made a formidable opponent on Jeopardy. She loved music, being partial to Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Jimmy Buffet, Bette Midler, The Chicks, and so many more.
Ramona was a caregiver and she lived with and cared for her grandmother Alice for her last 10 years. She adored her mother in law, Sally Van Gilder and the feeling was mutual. She also deeply loved great nephew, Logan Robison, who lived with them for several years.
Ramona was pre deceased by her parents, Nolan and Billie Mathis; her grandparents, Walter and Alice West, Jack and Lillian Mathis, William Rogers; her mother and fathers in law, Sally and Bill Van Gilder and Phil Phillips; her sister in law Suzanne Vieregge and her brothers in law, Dick Phillips and Bradley Phillips.
