We will honor the life of Murrell Allen Thompson, Sr., 83, of Lubbock, on Friday, June 28, 2024, beginning with a graveside service at Resthaven Memorial Park at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11:00 a.m. at Aldersgate Church located at 10306 Indiana Ave in Lubbock, Texas, with Rev. Ryan Smallwood officiating.
Murrell Allen Thompson, Sr., went home to be with his Lord and Savior on June 24, 2024. He was born on January 19, 1941, in Ada, Oklahoma to C. Murrell and Helen Steffy Thompson. He graduated from Albany High School and attended Tarleton State University. He married the love of his life, Sandra Sue Williams on January 25, 1964.
He worked in Oilfield Construction & Contracting for ARCO, Carpenter Oilfield Construction before eventually opening Matco. He retired from the oilfield in 2003, and he and Sandra moved to Lubbock to spend their golden years with their children and grandchildren. Murrell loved nothing more than caring for his loved ones, and spending time with his family. His most prized titles were “Dad” and “PaPa”. He spent many, many hours watching his grandchildren’s sporting events, and was an avid Texas Tech Red Raider fan. He had a passion for the outdoors, and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son, Mat, Sons-in-laws, and his grandchildren.
He was Christened into the United Methodist Church on Easter Sunday of 1941, and most recently worshipped as a member of Aldersgate Church, in Lubbock Texas. He was a Faithful Follower of Christ with a true servant’s heart and was a member of the Masonic fraternity.
Those in Heaven to welcome him home are his son Murrell Allen " Mat” Thompson, Jr., his parents, C. Murrell and Helen, and his parents-in-law W.C. “Dub” and Melba Williams.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 60 years, Sandra; children Sherri Lynn & Cary Wood, Kristi Dawn & Jason Jones, Julie Anne & Rusty Lawson, and Stephanie (Mat) Thompson; grandchildren Kayleigh, Ashleigh, Kristen, Matthew, Marleigh, Karleigh, Tucker, Kason, Kylar and Cade; great-grandchildren Bentley, Beckham, Layton, Baylor, Raiden and Boston; his siblings Charles & Sarah Thompson, and Debie & Greg Black; numerous nieces and nephews, a large extended family, and countless friends who became family.
Murrell’s memory will be cherished, and his legacy as a Husband, Dad, PaPa, servant and friend will live forever in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Murrell with donations to the Scottish Rite for Children, or the charity of your choice.
