Mira Jean was born to Alfred H. and Lillian Mira Sluss on January 31, 1924, in Kansas City, Missouri. She graduated from the University of Kansas in 1945 with a Bachelor of Social Sciences. She then received a Masters Degree in Deaf Education from the University of Omaha in 1964. She taught at the Nebraska School for the Deaf from 1964-1966. She then continued her teaching career in Lubbock as one of only two Deaf Education teachers in West Texas. In 1975 she became one of the first Regional Supervisors for the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf and hired the first group of teachers for the program. She retired in 1985.
Mira Jean married Henry W. Kaufmann on October 8, 1949. They had 2 children. Mira Jean and Henry were members of First United Methodist Church and were in the Homebuilders Class. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Alpha Delta Pi Alumni Association, and the South Plains Genealogical Society. She and Henry enjoyed traveling, volunteering for several organizations, and their dogs.
Mira Jean was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by a daughter, Karen Smith and husband, Kelly; her son, Steve Kaufmann and wife Kimberly, her grandchildren Kristopher Smith and wife Susan; Kathryn Harlan and husband Don; Kyle Gould and wife Laura; Kody Gould and wife Chelsea; and 7 great-grandchildren.
