Born in Pecos, TX at the historic Camp Hospital on September 8, 1936 while on a visit to her grandparents, she was the daughter of Julia Magee Hartley & James Elma, (J.E.) Hartley.
Mary Jane was a native of Lubbock and a lifelong Lubbock High Westerner. Her favorite stories from her early days were singing in the choir with her classmate, Buddy Holly and performing at Texas Tech, where she graduated in 1958 with a degree in Home Economics Education and began a tradition of service with her sisters as a lifelong member of Sigma Kappa.
She married Kent Shannon in 1957 and moved to Roswell, New Mexico after their graduation from Texas Tech. Mary Jane enjoyed the community life of Roswell. She was Pageant Director of the Miss Wool contest for many years, performed in the Roswell Community Little Theater and even had a brief stint as a radio and TV personality on KSWS as the host of “Coffee Break with Mary Jane.”
Mary Jane, AKA “Mom” to her students at Mountain View Middle School taught many subjects, but her love of singing made directing choir her passion. She produced wonderful musicals year after year, taught private voice lessons at her home and instilled a sense of confidence and purpose in the lives of many students. She will be remembered fondly as the “Dragon Lady” from her teaching years; a name she was proud to have earned through her kind, yet firm strength of character and fiery red hair.
Mary Jane was the picture of civic engagement and very involved in Lions Club International. She loved their mission of service to community and the opportunities membership gave her for travel to conventions all over the world. Together with her longtime partner, Lee Boyd Montgomery, she moved up the ranks to become District Governor for NM District 40 N in Santa Fe, then Multiple Council Chair.
Mary Jane’s return to Lubbock allowed her to return to her Texas Tech roots, join the Lubbock Music Club, attend multiple Lubbock High and Sigma Kappa reunions and, best of all, re-engage with her childhood congregation at First Christian Church. She loved singing with their Silver Stars choir. Her church was her bedrock and she was happy to rejoin her lifelong friends in Sunday school and hand out church programs every week.
Mary Jane is survived by her sister, Julia Hartley Hoffman Schulman and spouse Jerry; her daughter, Carma and spouse Martin Ryan; her son, Robert and spouse Michele Shannon; her grandchildren: Raina, Adam, Jacob Shannon, Tyler and Ian Moran.
Described as “relentlessly cheerful”, Mary Jane had boundless love and a big smile for everyone.
