Martha S Payne

Martha was born in Ballinger, Texas to Alec and Rama Saunders. She met her husband Edgar in grade school, and they were married for 58 years before his death in 2007. They moved all across Texas for Edgar’s coaching and educational career settling in Lubbock in 1970. After her children became school aged, Martha graduated from Lamar University with an education degree and taught elementary school for close to forty years. Edgar and Martha shared in their passion for working with young people. Nothing warmed her heart like seeing a former student with their children and reminiscing of their days as a young student. She enjoyed painting, singing in choir, and visiting with her church family at Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Martha is survived by her sons, Stephen and Philip (Dawn) Payne; grandchildren Stephanie, Neal, and Chandler Payne; and great-grandchildren Alivia, Addison, Ava, and Asher. She was also very fond of many extended family members and her friend of 46 years, Sue Lewis.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11am on Friday, 6/8 at Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Lubbock. Burial will be in Ballinger.

The family suggests donations be made to Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Lubbock.
