Mariano Gomez, Sr., 70 years old, of Lubbock went to join our Heavenly Father on Monday, March 05, 2012 at Palliative Medicine Unit, in Lubbock after a lengthy illness. He was born August 16, 1941 in El Huisache, San Luis Potosi, Mexico, to Atilano and Dionisia Gomez.
He married Lucia Gomez October 27, 1961 and celebrated their Golden Anniversary in October 2011. He was employed by Steere Tank Lines Inc. for 20 years, then employed by Frontier Fertilizer, now known as United Suppliers, another 23 years until illness overcame him.
Mariano was a resident of Lubbock since 1969 and was an avid Texas Tech Tailgater and Red Raider supporter. He was actively involved at St. Theresa Catholic Church and also a Cursillista. Mariano was a very loving husband, father, son and brother as well as respected by friends and co-workers and will be missed by all who knew him.
Mariano is survived by his wife, Lucia Gomez, children, Mario Gomez of Lubbock, Mariano Gomez and wife Elena of Austin, Sylvia Gomez Vela and husband Manuel of San Antonio, Pablo Gomez and wife Brenda of Pflugerville, 19 Grandchildren 15 Great-grandchildren, and his siblings Jose Gomez, Victor Gomez, and Mary Flores, all of Amarillo, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his sons Oscar Gomez and Juan Jose Gomez, and his brother Johnny Vidal Gomez.
A Rosary is scheduled for 7:30pm on Wednesday, March 7 at Resthaven’s Abbey Chapel,
5740 West 19th Street, Lubbock; Mass of Christian Burial will be officiated by Rev. Peter D’Souza and concelebrant Rev. Dennis Prisco at St. Theresa Catholic Church at 22nd and Upland St. on Thursday, March 8, at 2pm. Burial will follow at Peaceful Gardens in Woodrow, Texas.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Michael Gomez, Israel Gomez, Jaime Gomez, Joshua Gomez, Manuel Miguel Vela, Juan Jose Vela, and honorary pallbearer Oscar Brandon Gomez.
Thank you to Hospice of Lubbock, the Palliative Medicine Unit at Covenant under the leadership of Dr. Melanie Oblender, as well as the team members and students of nursing that contributed greatly to Mariano’s comfort. The Holy Spirit was very strong and present in everyone while we were there.
