Lubbock - Lynn Ray Wright went home to be with his Lord, Wednesday, September 7, 2022. He was born on November 15, 1925, in Ravenna, Texas, to Ewell Alford Wright III and Goldie Alice (Odum) Wright. He had one younger sister, Patricia Ann, who died at birth leaving him to be raised as an only child. He attended school in Bonham, Texas until the age of 17 at which time he and his family moved to Lubbock, Texas. He then attended Lubbock High School until he graduated. He met Dorothy Louise Henry at the small Baptist church they both attended. They were later married on October 13th, 1945 when he was 19 and Dorothy was 16 years old.
He entered the Army at age 18 on March 27, 1944 to help fight for his Country and served in the United States Army from 1944 until June 18, 1946. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive campaign of World War II, and was Honorable Discharged after having been seriously wounded during combat. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and various other metals during his service time. After his return home from serving his country, to Lubbock and his wife Dorothy, he began his career as an Automotive Service Technician in the Ford auto industry where he worked for 45 years until he retired in 1992 from Pioneer, Lincoln and Mercury Company.
He and Dorothy (known to all during her life as “Louise”) were blessed with 2 daughters during their marriage. Sheila Ann was born September 28, 1948 and Sharon Gae was born June 11, 1951. Lynn and Dorothy Louise were married for 76 years at the time of his death. They were one month short of being married 77 years.
His big passions were Country and Blue Grass music, Old Time Gospel songs, Ham Radios, Photography, Computers and only Ford vehicles. He would spend hours upon hours listening to music and very loudly too. During the 1950’s, he and Louise would have musician friends, as well as Louise’s brothers- L.D. and Floyd Jr. over to play music in the house. They would move all of the living room furniture into the yard so everyone could fit in the house with their music instruments. Neighbors would bring their chairs outside and listen to all of the wonderful music that was played until early morning hours. He collected a massive number of vinyl record albums, cassettes and CD’s from the 1940’s to current day. During the early days of his music- he taught Sheila and Sharon how to waltz very gracefully. He was an awesome dancer even if he denied it. Sadly, he lost most of his hearing in later years and music ended up being a memory of the past for him.
Being almost 97 years old- he saw lot of changes in the world during his life time. He went from mules and plows as a child to huge self-driving tractors in his later years. He saw many inventions- rotary phones, television, computers, cell phones and machines that will tell you what the exact problem is with your car. He came from a small country church where you were baptized in the local creek to the full TV productions that can be viewed from living rooms each Sunday. He saw almost 100 years of changes! He accepted Christ as his Savior at the age of 10 but he waited until May 27, 2018 when he was 92 years old to be Baptized.
He was preceded in death by his Father, Ewell Alfred, III on September 20, 1978 and Mother, Goldie Alice, on October 9, 1990. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Sheila Wright Knight, who passed away on her 69th birthday. He is survived by his loving wife of 76 years, Dorothy Louise; daughter, Sharon Wright Watson, (husband Mike Watson); 4 grandsons, David Knight, Kevin Knight, (wife Amanda Knight), Brandon Ward, (wife Nancy Ward); Chase Watson; 1 granddaughter, Tara Camp, (husband Stuart Camp); 6 great grandchildren, Kara and Kelsie Knight; McKenna Ward, Kaden and Kolby Allen (Ward) and Jaxon Camp along with numerous other relatives.
Visitation will be held Monday, September 12, 2022 from 6-8 PM at Resthaven Funeral home in Lubbock, Texas. Memorial services will be held at Resthaven as well on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at 10 AM.
