Mary Katherine Shafer Leonard was born June 27, 1931 in Wichita Kansas to Ellen and Carl Shafer. She moved to Lubbock in August of 1946. She graduated from Lubbock High of May 1948 and went on to Texas Tech where she graduated in 1952 with a BA degree in Elementary Education and a minor applied fine arts. She was a member of the first madrigal singers group at Texas Tech. She married Robert D Leonard July of 1952. She was a home maker and mother to her children. She joined the Lubbock Music Club in 1963 and was a life member. She also directed the Asbury Methodist Church Choir 2 years following her husband’s death on Dec 30, 1991.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband Robert Leonard, her parents Carl and Ellen Shafer and her sister Marcia Jo Evans. She is survived by Bennett C Leonard of Midland and Mona Ellen Mroz of Hobbs, NM, 3 grandsons Robert Mroz, Philip Mroz and Andrew Leonard, granddaughter Stephanie Leonard Vaughn and 4 great grandchildren.
A visitation for Katherine will be held Thursday, November 3, 2022 from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Resthaven Funeral Home, 5740 West 19th St, Lubbock, TX. A chapel service will occur Friday, November 4, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Resthaven Funeral Home.
