Karen is the loving mother of Nicholas Andrew Rogers, devoted grandmother of Judah Malcolm Rogers, and caring stepmother of Andrew Douglass Burton and Allison Jane Whitney, as well as step grandmother to Ariella Jane and Saydee Mae Whitney.
Born and raised in Lubbock, Karen graduated from Lubbock High School and went on to obtain her PhD from Texas Tech University in conjunction with the Scottish Rite Learning Center of West Texas. Karen returned to Lubbock after her residency and spent the next few decades working tirelessly to improve resources for families of children with mental and behavioral disabilities. Including years of activism partnering with programs like High Point Village, Sharp Academy, Lubbock Llano Lions Club, and Boy Scouts of America. Karen was a leading expert on Autism and Pediatric Behavioral disorders in the state of Texas and was a member of the State Board on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
Karen deeply loved the Lubbock Community and spent thousands of hours mentoring students at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. She was an active member of her church Bacon Heights Baptist and spent over ten years faithfully serving in their preschool ministry where she continually shared her faith and led little ones to believe in Jesus Christ.
Karen's legacy not only lives on in her accomplishments, but in the countless lives that she touched in every aspect of her life. She was an amazing example of how to love people like Jesus. Her generosity and willingness to meet people at their place of greatest need, as well as her true ability to
see the best in all of us, will be deeply missed by many.
Karen was a beloved grandmother, it was often said that her grandson Judah was her soulmate and best friend. Outside of her passion for children with behavioral needs, Karen found true joy in spending time with her family. She was an enthusiastic Red Raiders fan. She was an avid gardener, outdoorswoman, and all around handywoman. Her home was a place full of warmth, laughter, and love. The loss of her will be felt for many, many years to come.
She is preceded in death by her parents Herbert Wayne and Jerry Lee Rogers, as well as her son Ashton Whitaker. She leaves behind brother Timothy Wayne Rogers (Fabianna Ortega), son Nicholas Andrew Rogers (Carly Rogers) and grandson Judah Malcolm Rogers, as well as stepchildren Andrew Douglass Burton and Allison Jane Whitney (Zach Whitney), and step granddaughters Ariella Jane and Saydee Mae Whitney.
