He married DeEtta Buxkemper on June 27, 1963. He received his higher education in accounting at Texas Tech University and became a successful business owner of Jarvis Metals Recycling until his retirement on December 31, 2020.
He was a lifelong member of St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church and a chartered member of Knights of Columbus Council # 3008 where he proudly served as Grand Knight and District Deputy.
John enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, watching Gunsmoke and sports, playing Yahtzee, working puzzles and listening to Floyd Cramer while enjoying his morning coffee.
John is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, DeEtta Buxkemper Shelby and four children: Tracy Shelby (Barbara), Vasia Craddick (Richard), Daneen Marsh (Darren) and Wade Shelby (Julie); Ten grandchildren: Ashton Craddick, Jake Shelby (Genesis), Shelby Elenburg (Tanner), Colson Craddick (Maegan), Abby Marsh, Jordan Mowles ( Andrew), Halley Marsh, Allison Shelby and Will Shelby. Two great grandchildren: Parker Elenburg and McCoy Craddick.
He is also survived by siblings: Pat Kitten, Billy Shelby, Eddie Shelby, Danny Shelby, Mary Leonard and Margie Dyess.
A Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 16, 2021, from 5PM to 6PM. A Rosary will follow beginning at 6PM at Resthaven Funeral Home Abbey Chapel with Deacon Richard McCann officiating. Celebration Of Life Mass will be held Thursday, June 17, 2021, at 10:00AM at St. Elizabeth’s University Parish, 2316 Broadway St. Lubbock, Texas, with Father Emiliano officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
