Jo Nita "Jo" Gilbert of Lubbock, age 95, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on September 26, 2024. Jo was born July 5, 1929 in Matador, Texas to Floyd William Webb and Shellah "Artie" (Plumlee) Webb.
She married Calvin Matthew Gilbert on December 25, 1946 in Matador, Texas and they moved to Lubbock in 1950. Jo and Calvin spent 58 wonderful years together in marriage until his death in 2004.
God came first in Jo's life. She had been a devoted member of Redbud Baptist Church for forty-four years and was part of the "Redbud Rubies". She and several friends at church started a small group who played dominoes and cards every Friday up until this year. She loved the food, games, and gossip they shared each week and made many friends over the years. Jo started working at an early age at Traweek Hospital in Matador as a candy-striper. She was also a pharmacy tech at Tom's Discount Drug and Stumbaugh Drug for many years. Later in life, she worked at Dunlap's Executive offices in downtown Lubbock as an assistant to the Regional Manager, and ultimately retired from Mervyn's selling bath items and linens. Jo was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority for 20 years. Throughout the years, she worked on every committee and office, served as Chapter President in every chapter she belonged to, and was honored several times as "Chapter Sweetheart" and "Woman of the Year". Her greatest honor was being awarded "Honor of the Rose" from the Beta Sigma Phi's founder from Kansas City.
Jo's large family were her pride and joy! She looked forward to family gatherings and was her happiest when she was able to spend time with them.
Jo is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother (Gene). Those left to cherish her memory are her three children: Ronnie (Kenan) Gilbert of Lubbock, Terry (Teenya) Gilbert of Spur, Texas, and Cheri (Greg) Sherrod of Lubbock. Nine grandchildren; Matt Gilbert of Lewisville, Texas, Mark Gilbert of Titusville, Florida, Kenley (Matt) Skinner Ft. Collins, Colorado, Lex (Robin) Curry of Lubbock, Brian (Jaclynn) Gilbert of Girard, Texas, Emily (Nick) Roediger of Kingsland, Georgia, Josh (Lindy) Sherrod of Lubbock, Jennifer (Alan) Burns of Lubbock, and Jordan (Thomas) Rodriguez of Lubbock. Eighteen great-grandchildren; Austin, Hayden, Tayler, Jakob, King, Helen, Tessa, Noah, Cameron, Michael, Jason, Kaden, Taryn, Jonah, Aleia, Stella, Jazlyn and Gabriel. Finally, Jo leaves behind her constant lap companion for the past seven years, her faithful little dog, LuLu. Jo has always been a fun-loving spirit all her life. I don't know anyone who hasn't heard one of her "crazy" stories or jokes. She was always the life of the party no matter where she went and if you knew her, you loved her. She is really going to be missed by everyone and has impacted so many people in the best way. Services will be held Monday October 7th 1:30pm at Redbud Baptist Church in Lubbock TX, Graveside to Follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Redbud Baptist Church, 801 Slide Rd. Lubbock, Texas 79416
