Jeffie Powell Smith

Funeral services will be held at 1pm on Thursday, June 24, 2010, at Resthaven’s Abbey Chapel with Wayne Horton officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park. Friends are invited to come and sign the register book from 8am to 8pm on Wednesday at Resthaven Funeral Home. Jeffie was born on January 25, 1919, in Red Springs, Texas, to the late Lee and Katie (Eavenson) Powell. She graduated from Seymour High School in 1937 and then from Abilene Christian College in 1941. Jeffie married Roger Smith on July 31, 1943, in Lubbock. He preceded her in death on July 11, 2000, after 57 years of marriage. Jeffie taught school for over 40 years at: Clyde High School, Tulia High School, Seminole Elementary, Lubbock Christian Elementary, and finally Lubbock Cooper in Woodrow.

Jeffie was preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters, three half-brothers, and one half-sister.

Those left to cherish her memories include three children: Judy Bechtold and husband Charles of Plainview, Sue Haberer and husband Don of Levelland, and Dr. Gary Smith and wife Kathy of Cedar Crest, New Mexico; three grandchildren: Staci Adams and husband David of McKinney, Chris Haberer and wife Mamie of Slaton, and Michael Bechtold of Plainview; a great grandchild, Gage Haberer of Slaton; two sisters: Clella Powell of Lubbock and Margie McCandless of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; and several nieces and nephews.
