On Sunday, September 25th, 2022, James (Jimmy) Alston Johnson, of Lubbock, passed away at the age of 87. Jimmy was born on November 7, 1934 in Slaton, Texas to Eva Mae and Earl Johnson. After living on the farm and attending school in Smyer, Texas, Jimmy and his family moved to Lubbock. He graduated from Lubbock High School in 1951 at the age of 16. He served in the Army from 1954-1956, where he was a high speed radio operator. He was highly skilled at communicating with Morse Code and was used to train others.
Jimmy met the “Love of his Life” Nancy Jo Rochelle, and they married on
January 24, 1958. During their wonderful 64 years of marriage, they had 3 sons and created many happy memories.
He graduated from Texas Technological College with an engineering degree specializing in Architecture. He started working at Hunter Millworks in 1967. He retired in 2004 after 37 years.
Jimmy enjoyed coaching his three boys in baseball, taking his family on fishing trips on the Brazos River, traveling to Ruidoso for the horse races, and many other family vacations. He also enjoyed playing golf with his life-long friends. His fondest memories were traveling to Hobbs with Nancy to go to the Casino and the cruise they went on for their 50th anniversary.
Jimmy was proceeded in death by his parents, his sister, Jeanette Edge and her husband Harmon. He leaves behind his Loving wife Nancy, 3 sons: Chuck (Kristi), JJ (Sara), David (Tammy) 7 Grandkids: Tiffany (David), Summer, Chad, Jack (Kelsey), Jeye, Brennan (Chelsi) and Bailee (Grant) and 6 Great Grandkids.
Visitation will be Friday, September 30th from 5:00-7:00 at Resthaven Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held on
October 1st at 2:00 at Resthaven Funeral Home and Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Jimmy’s name to:
First United Methodist Church of Lubbock or
Lubbock Meals-on-Wheels.
