He was born October 20, 1936, in Cisco, Texas, to Roy Lee and Odessa (Turknett) Garrett. He was on the football team at Handley High School in Fort Worth, Texas, and went on to graduate from Texas Tech with undergraduate degrees in psychology and history. A life-long student, he later earned a master's degree in international relations from the University of Arkansas and another master's in anthropology from Texas Tech. His career with the Civil Service took him to duty stations in Illinois, Colorado, Utah, Alabama, Texas and Germany. He was an active member of Monterey Baptist Church, especially the choir, and sang second tenor in the gospel quartet Boundless Love.
He is survived by his sister Carolyn Tamplen and husband, George, of Wickett, Texas; sister Toni Salama and husband, Youssef; and niece Laurie Hasty and husband, Rick, of Fort Worth.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 22, in Resthaven's Abbey Chapel. Entombment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors at Resthaven Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 21. Memorials are suggested to the donor's favorite charity.
