God called Georgia Larie Calvert Biggs home on March 7, 2023 at the age of 92 years. She was born July 11, 1930 to George Washington Calvert and Jewell Marie (Offield) Calvert in Afton at the home of her grandparents Henry Lee and Lucy Viola (Millican) Offield. After Georgia, George and Marie welcomed two sons: Dennis Lee Calvert (1934) and Alva Gene Calvert (1939). Georgia attended school in Spur, Tx, and graduated from Lubbock High School in 1948.
Georgia met James Grady Biggs, Jr. on a blind date. Before meeting Georgia, James told his mother he wanted to marry a redhead. They married on July 15, 1948 in Lubbock at the home of her parents. Clark Johnson officiated. They married four days after her 18th birthday. Three days later, they celebrated James’ 23rd birthday. Georgia and James later welcomed two children: Ronald James Biggs and Jan Larie Biggs. Georgia and James were married for 57 years before James’ passing in 2005. Georgia was a second mother, “Momma Georgia,” to many, including friend’s children, neighbor children, Ronnie’s and Jan’s friends, and many bowling children. Her loving influence is indelible.
Georgia grew up a devoted Christian in the Church of Christ. As a child, she worshipped with the Steel Hill congregation in Spur, Tx, the old Ninth Street Church in Littlefield, and with the West McMasters congregation in Amarillo. In 1943, the family moved to Lubbock and affiliated with the 17th street and Ave N. congregation. Her family (George, Marie, Dennis, and Gene) were among the original 15 members of the first service at 4th street and Ave D. Church of Christ in October, 1945. Her father was ordained as an elder and minister of the Gospel in 1957. Later, the 4th street and Ave D. congregation began to worship at the Memphis Avenue Church of Christ. In 1963, the Memphis Ave leaders recommended George to minister to a new congregation at a Church of Christ that would be built at 78th street and University Ave. In 1977, Georgia, James, Ronnie, and Jan moved to Quaker Avenue Church of Christ. At Quaker Ave, Georgia enjoyed volunteering on multiple committees, and organizing the Single Ladies Lunches. Georgia’s mother, Marie, endowed a book fund in George´s memory to help young preachers purchase the study aids they need. Marie felt this would have pleased George and she knew it would provide blessings to those who, like her husband in his youthful days, had to struggle to secure the needed books. Over the years, Georgia was a large contributor to the fund.
Georgia discovered a great love for bowling early in life. Her love of the sport drove her to serve in multiple capacities within various bowling associations, including Secretary of the Lubbock American Junior Bowling Congress, Director, and then President of the Lubbock Women’s Bowling Association (LWBA). After serving as President, she was awarded Member Emeritus status. Later, she was inducted into the LWBA Hall of Fame, and her name can be found in the International Bowling Museum & Hall of Fame in Arlington, Tx. Georgia loved working with youth bowlers and taking them to tournaments. She also loved weekly league bowling and going to tournaments across the country with her cherished friends. In her senior years, she joined both Seniorcize exercise class and a lively Bunco group. She also loved playing dominos, especially 88.
Georgia and James moved next door to the Tapp family in 1961. A great, life-long friendship formed. The Tapp family frequently invited the Biggs family to their place on the North Shore of Lake Kemp, near Seymour, Tx. After experiencing so much joy at the lake, The Biggs purchased a place almost next door to the Tapps. The Biggs frequently invited friends to their place, including other Biggs and Calvert family members, The Archers, The Beauchamps, The Butlers, The Butts, The Wests, and more. The Butlers and The Archers purchased places there as well. The Granburys, from Lubbock, purchased a place from The Taylors (in Vernon) on the North Shore and the families had their own Lubbock cove. The families frequently went to the lake on the same weekends and all would take a day trip to an island that was dubbed “Little Chicken.” The families found many ways to have fun with their boats - skiing, inner tubing, body surfing, and being pulled on large surf boards. Fishing was a big part of the fun. The families also all treasured the many fish frys that were shared over the years.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Jan; her daughter-in-law Debbi (Biggs) McKibben; her brother-in-law Hershel and wife Margaret; her sister-in-law Patty (Calvert) Beach; twelve nephews and nieces, Trish (Calvert) Ring and husband Carl, Greg Biggs and wife June, Gene Calvert, Jr. and wife Suzanne, Dee Calvert and wife Suzann, Lori (Biggs) Templeton and husband Bryan, and Jennifer (Calvert) Nash and husband Joel, and a world full of friends!
She was also a grandaunt to 14 grandnephews and grandnieces. She stepped up to a grandmother role for her younger brother’s (Gene, Sr.) grandchildren, after his passing in 2002. Recently, she became a great-grandaunt to 8 great-grandnephews and great-grandnieces. Now, she has 3 more on the way! She was very proud to be an aunt and grandmother!
Georgia is preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, and both brothers.
Georgia was “One of Us” for all things Texas Tech. She was an avid fan, watching all the games. In earlier years, she and James had season tickets to the football games. She also watched all Kansas City football games after Patrick Mahomes became the quarterback.
Everyone who knew Georgia loved her! She will be remembered as a faithful Christian, devoted to her family and church, a lover of bowling and fishing, and a passionate Red Raider Rooter. All will remember her wonderful sense of humor and loving heart.
