Memorial services for George Van Slyke, 88, of Lubbock will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, February 4, 2011 at Highland Baptist Church. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 pm, Thursday, February 3, 2011 at Resthaven Funeral Home.
George passed from this life with family by his side, Saturday, January 29, 2011 in Lubbock.
George G. Van Slyke was born June 12, 1922 in Dallas, Texas to the late Anson and Nellie (Burgert) Van Slyke. He graduated from weather school at Cal Tech and served as a weather officer in the United States Armed Services during WWII and Korea. George graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering and worked at Reese Air Force Base for 33 years before his retirement. He married Elizabeth Ann Spencer in Dallas; she preceded him in death October 31, 1967. He was later married to Wilma Stokes Exum for 32 years; she also preceded him in death on March 22, 2006. He was a member of Highland Baptist Church, a Registered Professional Engineer and a Master Mason. Those left to cherish his memory are his children; Marilyn Van Slyke of Lubbock, Glenn Van Slyke and wife, Cassie of Lubbock, Linda
Schroeder and husband, Paul of California, Tracy Van Slyke and wife, Amy of El Paso, Jan Pollard and husband, Gary of Plano and Robin Exum and wife Jan of Houston, 14 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society, 3513 10th St, Lubbock, TX 79415.
