The youngest of the twelve children of Bert and Martha Jamison, Florence was born September 23, 1924, in Pearland, Texas. She married Donald A. Gum on November 16, 1946, in Houston. He preceded her in death after 67 years of marriage on September 22, 2014. Florence and Don were avid travelers over the years, visiting more than 40 countries and 25 islands.
She was a 1941 honor graduate of Pearland High School. After graduating from Durham's Business College in Houston, she worked as a legal secretary prior to moving to Lubbock in 1950. In Lubbock, she served as Acting Executive Director of the Caprock Girl Scout Council in 1958-59; and from 1961 until 1974 was Executive Secretary at Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was a long time Legal Secretary at the Law Firm of McWhorter, Cobb and Johnson, being employed there in 1951, during 1954-56 and from 1974 until her retirement in April of 1991.
Florence was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1955, where she served as an Elder, Clerk of the Session, Junior Division Superintendent, a member of the Women's Council, Historian, Circle Chairman and Bible Moderator. She sang in the Chancel Choir for over 60 years. In addition to being published in the HORIZONS magazine, in 1998 she compiled and edited, "The First Fifty Years", a 242 page history of Westminster Church. She was a past president of Church Women United, secretary of the Lubbock Area Presbyterian Council, and treasurer of the Lubbock Association of Churches. She served the larger church and its committees as a Commissioner to Palo Duro Presbytery, Synod of the Sun, and General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
She was a member and past president of Chapter DP, P.E.O. Sisterhood, a past president of the Lubbock Area P.E.O. Council and Historian of the Texas State Chapter. She served as a Girl Scout Leader and Neighborhood Chairman for the Caprock Council. She held memberships in the Allegro Music Club and several bridge clubs.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan; a son, Brian and wife Lynn, of Lubbock, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews, and grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. In addition to her beloved husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, eight brothers and three sisters.
