Esther was born to Robert and Johanna Wilson on April 22, 1926 in Hillsborough, New Jersey. She passed away Wednesday February 11, 2015 in Lubbock. She was a first generation American, her parents immigrating from Scotland in 1924. Esther graduated from Hicksville High School (NY) in June 1944. She attended Adelphi School of Nursing, obtaining her nursing certificate in March, 1947. She completed her BS at Adelphi College in 1948.
In December, 1944 Esther joined the US Cadet Nurses Corp to assist the country during World War II. She served until the program’s end in 1948. She then took leave from Meadowbrook Hospital (NY) and volunteered for Polio duty in Salt Lake City, Utah. She continued her nursing career working with various Veteran's Administration Hospitals and Hilaire Nursing Home on Long Island.
On June 7, 1952 Esther wed Dr. Robert Lonngren, MD. They had 5 sons together while living on Long Island and then Upstate New York. He preceded her in death in November, 1968. She married Howard Fraser on July 3, 1988 in Huntington, NY. They spent many years traveling the world and enjoying their grandchildren, finally settling in Lubbock. She lost Howard in March 2009.
Esther is survived by five sons, Robert Lonngren (Maggie) of Tucson, AZ; Kenneth Lonngren (Jan) East Greenwich, RI, Douglas Lonngren (Marlin), Santa Fe, NM, Chris Lonngren (Liz), Lubbock, TX and David Lonngren, Lubbock, TX; and three step daughters, Holly Wylie (Paul), Huntington Beach, CA, Debbie Fraser (New York City) and Cindy Fraser, Raleigh, NC. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, many nephews, nieces and cousins, both in the U.S. and Scotland. Esther was still close to many friends from her childhood and nursing school.
The family would like to thank the Carillon LifeCare Community staff and residents for many years of friendship and caring for Esther.
Visitation will be at Resthaven Funeral Home, 5740 W. 19th St., Lubbock, from 5:30-7:30 P.M., Monday, February 16, 2015. A graveside service will be held at Resthaven, at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, February 17, 2015. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 P.M., Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at the Carillon Neil Chapel, 1717 Norfolk Ave. in Lubbock.
