Dr. Merlyn L. Harger of Deer Park, TX, entered into eternal rest on March 10, 2023 at the age of 85. He was born to the late Orland Floyd and Lois Jean (Henkle) Harger on January 8, 1938 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Dr. Merlyn was of the first graduating class,1956, of Monterey High School in Lubbock, TX. Upon graduation, he faithfully served in the United States Marine Corp before furthering his education at Texas Tech University for his undergraduate degree; and later attending the University of Houston for his Doctorate degree in optometry.
He loved enjoying the outdoors. Some of his favorite outdoor activities included skiing, wind surfing in Houston, rollerblading, and golfing. He was a member of the Houston Ski Club and won over 100 medals. He made sure to pass on his passion of rollerblading to his step-children and grandchildren.
Dr. Merlyn also enjoyed serving the community he lived in. Whether it was alongside his wife in Art Association or Gardening Club, or through the Rotary Club doing missionary trips to Mexico, he always maintained active in his community. He was also the local optometrist of Deer Park, TX for numerous years and enjoyed serving his patients and gaining friendships within the community.
He was a longtime member of Deer Park Methodist Church, and his presence will be missed dearly.
Dr. Merlyn was also preceded in death by his brothers, Lyle Harger and Charles Harger and sister, Cheryl Boyd. He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Helen Harger; step-daughters, Bethany Kastanek and Belinda (Kenneth) Lowrie; grandchildren, Lacee (Delwyn) Young and Braidy Bingham; great-granddaughter, Ashlyn Young; his brother, Gary (Elene) Harger; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
The family invites you to honor and celebrate his life with a Memorial Service at 11am on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at Deer Park Methodist Church.
