Doug grew up in Kermit Texas and graduated from Kermit High School in 1981. He attended Texas Tech University where he honed his gift; one that he pursued with an incredible passion from the early age of two. He worked as a solo musician, playing in prestigious venues such as the Ryman Theatre, the Spencer Theatre, the Godbold Cultural Center, the Garza Hotel and The Texas Tech Music Hall until he suffered a tragic injury in 2007 that left him paralyzed from the chest down. Even with the physical challenges presented by his injury, Doug continued to produce and perform until his last days.
He was a passionate and loving father to his two sons, a thankful son and humble friend who gave of himself freely, with a gentle but protective spirit that guarded the people and music he loved fiercely. He was a committed Believer and spent some part of every day being thankful for his special gifts even on tough days brought on by his injury. Although he has moved on to a better place, his legacy will live on in his music and in our hearts.
Doug was 52 years old. He is survived by his two sons, Dylan and Todd Smith of Lubbock, by his sister and brother in law Tamara and Grant Schulz of Midland, niece Peyton Schulz of Midland, by his mother and father, Linda and Tommy Smith of Kermit, and by his granddaughter, Ella Marie Smith.
