Doris N. Evans, 91, of Lubbock peacefully passed away at home April 18, 2012. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. John’s United Methodist Church with Rev. Ted Dotts officiating. A graveside service will be held Monday, 10 a.m. at Resthaven Memorial Park.
Born March 22, 1921 in Hillsboro, Doris was the daughter of Frank James and Mamie (McMillian) Smith. She married W. Grady Evans on October 18, 1941 in Alvarado and they moved to Crosbyton in 1946. In 1972 they moved to Lubbock where Doris was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church. She became devotedly involved in the Lubbock Women’s Club, serving as president during the year 1988-89, St. John’s UMC United Methodist Women, a founding member of the P.E.O. International Chapter FJ and president for the chapter during the year 1990-91 and also the Lubbock Jr. Garden Club. Doris’ artistic touch and mastery of needlepoint can be seen in the alter cushions still in use at St. John’s United Methodist Church and one could count themselves blessed if they received their baby announcement, graduation announcement or wedding invitation back after Doris had turned it into a piece of art through her art of quilling. Doris was quite the hostess and even displayed that trait to the visitors and wonderful caregivers that were serving her during the later years of her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and one brother, Jim and two sisters, Mary and Martha.
Doris is survived by her sister-in-law Tommie Smith, two nieces, Marjorie Elliott and husband Tommy, and Melodye Taylor and husband Scott and by great nieces Katie and Kayla Elliott and Lauren and Meredith Taylor.
