Dan, along with his twin brother, Van were born in Quanah, TX. August 26, 1945 to Byron Vestal and Mary (Young) Newberry.
In 1947 the family moved to Hamlin, Texas. Dan graduated from Hamlin High School in 1963. He attended Hardin-Simmons University on a golf scholarship. There he met the love of his life Kay Rainwater. While at HSU he was a member of Sigma Delta Sigma Social club. He was also Cadet Colonel of the Army ROTC his senior year at HSU. Upon graduation in 1968 he was commissioned a second lieutent in the Regular Army. He served his country in Germany and Vietnam. He resigned his commission in July 1971 at the rank of Captain.
He taught Biology and coached at Hamlin Junior High from 1971-1974. In 1974 he moved his family to Wolfforth, Texas. He was Jr. High and High School Counselor for a year then he was promoted to Principal of Frenship Jr. High in 1975. He served there for 9 years then he chose to move to the elementary level. He was principal of Reese Elementary and Casey Elementary from 1984 until his retirement in 2001. In 2001, he became a beloved member of the Resthaven Funeral Home Family.
Along with his Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Physical Education from Hardin Simmons University, he received his Master of Education in 1974 in Guidance and Counseling. In 1979, he received another Master of Education in Mid-Management from Sul Ross State University, Alpine. Dan organized the Chapter of Nation Honor society at Frenship High School in 1975.
He was a member of the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association, Life member of Texas State Teachers Association, Bacon Heights Baptist Church Deacon where he also served on numerous committees. Along with Educational and Church oriented activites, Dan also volunteered his time to the community. Dan was an active member of Wolfforth Lions Club, charter member of Wolfforth Area Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture and he served on the Wolfforth City Council for 10 years.
Dan is preceded in death by his father, BV Newberry in 1994 and his daughter, Mollie Beth Newberry in 1985.
Those left to honor and cherish his memory are his loving wife, Kay Newberry, sons; Todd Eric and Kyra Newberry of Muleshoe, TX, Cory Dan and Tina Newberry of Plano, TX mother; Mary Newberry and brother, Van and Ann Newberry all of Abilene grandchildren; Kamron, Tyler, Nicholas, Addyson and Gabriela Newberry.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Bacon Heights Baptist Church Building Fund, Vista Care Hospice, Leslea Vardy Underwood Cancer Fund at Peoples Bank or the First Baptist Church of Muleshoe.
Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2011 at Bacon Heights Baptist Church with Dr. Jerry Joplin, Truman Johnson and Dr. Ken Horn officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
