William Christopher “Chris” Kountz, 83, passed away July 4, 2014 in Lubbock. He was born March 7, 1931 to William and Kathleen Kountz in Pecos TX. He graduated from Ft. Davis High School then attended Sul Ross University where he graduated in 1952. Chris then entered the U.S. Navy and served from 1952 to 1958. He married Lillian Franklin in 1955. After military service he attended Texas Tech where he received his Master’s degree in 1960. He began teaching Vocational Agriculture in Garden City in1960 and also taught in Alpine before coming to Monterey High School in 1965 where he taught until his retirement in 1990. Chris was President of the Vocational Ag Teachers Association of Texas from 1983 to 1984. He was a member of the VATAT Board and the NVATA. Chris was active in agriculture events all his life including judging many events across West Texas. He was an avid Texas Tech fan and a member of Oakwood Baptist Church.
Chris is survived by his daughter, Kristi Mathis and husband Keith of Bushland, TX; brother, Van Kountz and wife Shirley of Lubbock; grandsons, Kory and Kameron both of Bushland; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
Visitation will be Wednesday July 9, 2014 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM in Resthaven Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Thursday July 10 at 10:00 AM in Resthaven's Abbey Chapel with Gil Lain, Pastor at Amarillo’s Paramount Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Bushland High School FFA Booster Club, POB 215, Bushland, TX 79012.
