Charles Guy Wright went to be with the Lord on his 88th birthday, January 15, 2022. He was born January 15, 1934 in Eastland, Texas to Troy Eunice Wright and Opal Irene Guy Wright. The family moved to Lubbock in 1941. Charlie, as his friends call him, attended Lubbock High School, where he played both football and baseball. After graduating from high school, he attended Hardin-Simmons University where he played baseball and enlisted in ROTC. Charlie moved back to Lubbock to attend Texas Tech in 1954, where he continued in the ROTC program, became a member of Phi Delta Theta social fraternity, and played baseball. He graduated from Tech in 1956.
While at Texas Tech Charlie attended First Baptist Church, where he met Cora Sue Morris and fell in love. She was the love of his life. They married August 21, 1957 and started a life together. Charlie served in the Army and continued in the reserves for many years, while working for Sue’s father at H.C. “Pip” Morris Oil Co. Charlie and Sue eventually bought the business and renamed it Wright Oil. They had their only child, Cheryl, in 1975. Charlie spent his life serving his family and his church. He sang in the church choir, served as deacon for First Baptist Church, and served in the Gideons International. He was also CWT Equipper, prayer partner, attended the Downtown Bible class, and served the Lord through jail ministry.
Charlie had many accomplishments in his life but none greater than the way he lived his life and the many people he touched with his kindness. He selflessly gave to anyone in need and opened his home and his heart to friends and family at any time. He was kind and gentle, a spiritual advisor for his family, and the rock they could always depend on. He was the best husband, father, grandfather, uncle, son-in-law, and father-in-law anyone could ask for.
Charlie is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Joyce Maxine Smith. His is survived by his wife Sue; daughter Cheryl Bushey; granddaughter Olivia Wright; son-in-law Walt Bushey; niece Joyce Phillips of Buda, Texas; niece Debra Coward (Bill) of Gatesville, Texas; numerous great nieces and nephews; niece Marcia Blackburn Smyth (Raoul) of Orange, California; great nephew Paul Smyth (Anna) of Orange, California; great grand niece Ruslana Smyth and great grand nephew Lucas Smyth, also of Orange, California.
