Cal was born September 17, 1927 in Munday, Texas to Philip and Annie (Dodson) Lowry. He graduated from Fort Worth Poly High in 1945 and attended Texas Christian University, Ouachita, Arlington State, and Texas Wesleyan where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. He also attended Air University Graduate School. He played football and basketball in college. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1945-48. He married Doris Daniel on November 19, 1949. He was an athletics coach for the Federal Prison System in Fort Worth from 1951-64. Cal was the PFT Director and coach for the undergraduate pilot training program at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring from 1964-77. He was a Special Education teaching assistant and volunteer coach at Coronado High School for 20 years. He served on the Board of Directors for the Citizens Federal Credit Union of Big Spring for over 40 years and has been an Elder at Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Cal was a devout Christian man with a great love for his family, all things sports, and people in general. He had an amazing knack for making everyone feel special. He touched so many lives by sharing so much of himself with others. He had a servant’s heart and whether it was a conversation, coaching, teaching, a pat on the back, a poem, or outstanding barbeque he had an uncanny gift for letting people know how much he cared. He will be greatly missed.
Cal is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Doris and their three children, LuAnne Luna and husband Tony of Lubbock, Cal Lowry, Jr. and wife Betty of Granbury, and Philip Lowry and wife Jude of Corpus Christi; brother Eugene Lowry and wife Kay of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Amanda Cummings of Shallowater, Mark Luna and wife Amanda of Lubbock, Stephanie Middaugh and hus-band Robert of Washington, D.C., and Tom Lowry of Granbury; and “the” great grandson Zachary Cummings of Shallowater; along with numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
