He served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1946 to 1949. He married the love of his life, Ann Russell, on June 17, 1946 in Denton while attending the University of North Texas, B. J. received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Texas, and a Master's Degree in Education with a certification in Educational Administration and Supervision from Texas Tech. His career in education began at Bowie,Texas and continued in Brownfield, Texas where he served as teacher and coach, and continued after moving to Lubbock in 1953. He taught and coached at Hutchinson Jr. High, until he went to be one of the administrators at the newly-opened Monterey High School in 1955.
At Monterey, Randles served as activities director, assistant principal, vice-principal, and became principal in 1965, continuing in that role until 1978, when he moved to the central office of Lubbock ISD. He served there until his retirement in the late eighties. After retiring, he earned his real estate license, as well as serving on the Board of Directors for Western National Bank. His most cherished memories, however, always centered around his service to students and teachers at Monterey. He loved Monterey and all those connected to the high school experience. He was proud to wear one blue sock and one red sock on gamedays, and never missed a game in person, by radio, or in the newspapers. He considered himself a true Plainsman.
Randles is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ann, and three children: Jon and Kelly Randles of Frisco, along with their children, Zack Randles of Lubbock, Samuel Randles of Ft. Worth, and Hayley Williamson of Plano; Lyn and Paul Rodgers of Missouri City, along with their children, Kristen Matticks, Kathryn Morris, and Thomas Rodgers, all of Missouri City; and Becky and Rusty Householder of Lubbock, along with their daughter Allison Sexton.
He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and eight sisters, as well as his grandaughter, Katy Sexton.
B. J. was a friend and mentor to many students, teachers, parents, and others in the Lubbock community and throughout Texas. His influence was far-reaching and impactful in the lives of others. His smile and sense of humor will never be forgotten. He never met a stranger. B.J. served as a deacon and worked as a volunteer in the office at Indiana Avenue Baptist Church. He was a committed, faithful Christian and reflected his love of the Lord each day of his life.
