Dr. Bhagwat (Ben) Misra was a prominent surgeon in Lubbock, Texas for 36 years at West Texas, Highland, St Mary’s and Covenant Hospital. His 55-year medical career expanded across India, the U.K., Canada and the USA. During this time, he took important roles including Chief of Staff, a teacher and was a leader of various global medical organizations. His greatest joys in life were his family, friends and serving his patients. Dr. Misra touched the lives of thousands of people with his love, compassion and care.

Ben was born on June 30, 1936 in Shajapur, India. He grew up and lived in Gwalior, India where he completed medical school. In 1960, he married Saroj Misra. He moved to England to further his training in surgery and then to Canada in 1970 to work as a general surgeon. He settled in Lubbock in 1977 with his wife and 2 children.

After retirement, Ben did not stop serving the community and had a strong affinity to Meals on Wheels. This was one of the many ways he wanted to stay in touch with his old patients. He also took on leadership roles at the Lion’s Club, the Lubbock Medical Society and was the President of the India Association. He enjoyed water skiing, snow skiing, scuba diving, traveling and playing golf.

Dr. Misra was blessed with a large loving family. He is survived by his wife (Saroj Misra); 2 children Anita Paulus (Spouse: William Paulus), Raju Misra (Spouse: Gauri Misra) and 4 grandchildren (Christina, Lauren, Kavita and Shreya). He also leaves behind 1 sister (Geeta Haryana). He was preceded in death by his sisters, Sarla, Chandrakala and Nirmala.

He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and the community. We would like to thank the Physicians, Nurses and Support Staff for taking great care of him during his illness. He had been battling cancer for the last two years and passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family.

His life will be honored and celebrated on Monday, August 22, 2022 with services beginning at 2:00pm at Resthaven Funeral Home.
