Betty was born in Brewster, Washington on April 24th, 1950 to Mildred and James H. Smith. She graduated from Pateros High School and attended Harding College (now University) graduating with a degree in physical education in 1974. During her high school days she placed her faith in Christ Jesus, accepted baptism, and was faithful throughout life. Betty married David E. Luke on May 12, 1973. The two were missionaries in Germany from 1975-1991, after which they moved to Lubbock, TX. Betty worked as an assistant elementary coach for several years, and eventually earned a license as a massage therapist.
She was active in her church life, teaching children's and ladies' Bible classes as well as speaking at women's retreats. She loved spending time with friends and family, especially her grandchildren. She loved to laugh and helped herself learn German by reading comic books. She was talented in crafts, sewing many beautiful clothes and toys for her children as they grew up. In her free time she liked to read and watch tennis and football. In later years she often worked at the polls for Lubbock County.
Betty is survived by her husband, David Luke, her three daughters Melanie (& Brian) Emmel, Ellen (& Jeremy) Horn, and Kristina (& James) Solomon, grandchildren Hope and Eric Emmel and Jessica and Rachel Solomon, as well as sisters Marty Olson and Yolanda Giboney, and brothers J. D. and Duane Smith.
A memorial service will be held for the family and friends on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at 10:30 am at South Plains Church of Christ. Flowers and gifts of condolence can be sent to South Plains Church of Christ, 806-794-3594, or to a cancer research facility.
