Barbara Ann "Babs" Rogers

Barbara Ann “Babs” Dawson Rogers, 84, of Lubbock died Saturday, March 11. Babs was born June 15, 1932, in Ysleta, near El Paso, to Carl Wilburn Dawson and Mollie Cavender Dawson. She was the eighth of ten children. Babs was an accomplished student in Ysleta Independent School District, also serving as yearbook editor and drum majorette.

On June 8, 1954, Babs met the love of her life, Gerald Rogers, on a blind date. They were married on October 10, 1954, in Lubbock. Gerald was a high school basketball couch in Crane, Texas, and Babs worked as a sports reporter for the Crane News, writing many column inches about the handsome, but no longer eligible, young coach.

After moving to Lubbock in 1955 Babs worked for T.I.M.E. Motor Freight and in 1963 began a career with Citizens National Bank, which became Texas Commerce Bank. She began as a teller and retired as a vice-president. Babs made many friends and served in several capacities for the American Bankers Association and Altrusa International community service organization. Babs was honored that her family was named Family of the Year for 1958-1969 at Wester Elementary School.

Babs and Gerald loved their Ransom Canyon community and were among the founding members of Ransom Canyon Fellowship Church. After retirement, Babs and Gerald enjoyed traveling in their motor home to all the 48 contiguous U.S. states and most of the Canadian provinces. They also enjoyed several cruises and traveled to many foreign countries.

As Texas Tech season ticket holders for more than 50 years, Babs and Gerald were ardent fans and supporters of Tech football and both men’s and women’s basketball teams. They enjoyed tailgating for Tech football and entertaining at parties, especially by performing their signature song, “Paper of Pins.”

Babs will be remembered for her caring heart, her dedication to her family, her fun-loving nature and her sassy sense of humor.

Babs is survived by her two sons and their families, Steve and Karen Rogers, their children Meredith Rogers, Robert and Kaitlin Rogers of San Antonio, and Kimberly and Kevin Thompson of Houston, and by Mark Rogers of Ransom Canyon, his children Mckenzie Rogers and Emily Rogers of Ransom Canyon, and Travis Rogers of Danville, Virginia, and many nieces and nephews. Babs was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Mollie Dawson, and her four brothers and five sisters.

Her family wishes to thank the caregivers at Raider Ranch and Interim Home Health and Interim Hospice for their love and attention to Babs. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to your favorite charity, some of Babs’ favorites were the American Lung Association, Altrusa International Children’s Home of Lubbock, Lubbock Food Bank, Salvation Army and Ransom Fellowship Church.
