He was born on December 29, 1940 in Woodstock, Illinois to the late Theodore Miller and Emily A. Stoffol. John was raised in McHenry. He grew up causing trouble and mischief with his lifelong best friend Cliff Kiehl. He worked on getting his pilot's license and attended University of Illinois before serving in the US Army as an automotive mechanic. After being honorably discharged, John worked his way up from mechanic, to foreman, to parts manager at Volkswagen/Toyota dealership in Libertyville where he met his future wife Toni. In 1985, John became owner of Main Paint and Decorating until 2000 when the Millers sold their home and business and moved to Colorado to be close to their daughter, son-in-law and future granddaughters. John and his son-in-law Mike went into business together in 2000 and John retired 15 years later.
He was a devoted husband, wonderful father, and exceptional grandfather. John loved to collect model trains and attend car shows with his hot rod VW bug. He was always building, fixing or refurbishing things in his spare time. John cherished spending time with his family and playing harmless pranks on his wife with his three grandchildren. His kindness was unmatched, his sense of humor was infectious, and he would always lift up those around him. His positive energy and humble nature brought joy to everyone who knew him. A highly evolved soul, he was a friend to all.
John is survived by his wife, Toni Rae Miller of Berthoud; daughter, Brandi M. Thomas; son-in-law and best friend, Michael G. Thomas and granddaughters, Hayden, Rian and Jessie.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Dolores and Robert Meier who loved and adored him very much.
