Jean was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan and attended University High. She graduated Vassar College in 1943.
In 1951, Jean moved to Midland, Texas with former husband Arthur W. Allen Jr. In Midland, she was on the Board of Directors for the League of Women Voters, Children's Diagnostic Clinic, and Family Counseling Service.
