Don D. Shaw, 81, was welcomed by his Lord and Savior on January 14, 2021. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. His serious medical issues in recent years showed his courage in facing life’s challenges with a smile. Don will be dearly missed and forever remembered by his family and all who had the fortune of knowing him.
Don was born in West Milton, Ohio to Deo Francis and Glenna Shaw. He grew up in Troy, Ohio and graduated from Troy High School in 1957. Don was employed at Hobart Engineering as a technical writer. In 1963 he married his high school sweetheart and best friend Ruth Ann Jelley of Casstown, Ohio. They made their home in the country outside of Piqua, Ohio. They were soon joined by two wonderful children, Julie, and Brent. After owning and running a bakery in Dayton, Ohio, Don was later employed at the Balancing Company as a Marketing and Sales Manager through the rest of his career.
He had a real flare for making people laugh through his quick wit and non-stop sense of humor. One of his favorite accomplishments was a local cable TV show in Troy, Ohio that he performed in with his brothers Sam and Larry Shaw. The show engaged the community with laughter, shenanigans, and call-in Karaoke. The police welcomed their antics because their show helped keep kids off the streets on Friday nights.
They moved to Loveland in 2001 so they could spend more time with their grandkids. Don loved Colorado through his hiking, camping, traveling, fishing, and photography. He was very artistic and creative. Don demonstrated this through his ceramics and incredible landscape paintings.
Music was important to Don and he had a vocal gift that he enjoyed sharing with others. Don and Ruth Ann enjoyed singing in the church choir and Don would create home recordings of his favorite songs. He knew his way around the kitchen often creating his own unique recipes while regularly competing in cooking contests. Don also enjoyed relaxing with computer programs such as flight, train, and tractor simulators.
One of Don’s biggest treasures was spending time with his grandkids. He took great pride in supporting them in their various activities and endeavors and would cheer the loudest to show his enthusiasm. He loved making them laugh with his silly jokes and pranks and instilled upon them the importance of being mischievous and finding fun in everyday life.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Ruth Ann Shaw of Loveland, Colorado, daughter Julie (Eric) Krug of Loveland, son Brent (Jason) Shaw of Columbus, Ohio, brothers Sam Shaw of Covington, Ohio, and Larry Shaw of Camden, Ohio. Don leaves behind 6 adoring grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
